RD-BR 2015 04-14 ROAD AND BRIDGE REPORT April 14, 2015 Present: Commissioners Wortman, Mullen and Kirsch; Rory Parsons, Road Supervisor; Jeremiah Theys, Great West Engineering Jeremiah presented the Commissioners with the Dunn Lane Bridge preliminary design. He stated that he got permits for the 83-foot span. There will be no center pier, which will be more economical. The bridge should have a 75 to 100 year life. Commissioner Wortman said that we will have to close the road while the bridge is being replaced. He will talk to the Careys to find out when there will be the least impact. He asked if the road surface is part of the contract or if the county will need to do that. Jeremiah said that the Commission will need to decide; they can do a variety of combinations. Rory stated that they will be doing a milling project in October/November, so he will have the gravel to finish up the road. Jeremiah noted that the County had received a work order for a bridge in Whitehall. Rory stated that there is no way to get equipment under the bridge, so it will have to be hand work. Jeremiah said that he will go look at the bridge this afternoon. Rory gave an update on what each crew has been working on. The Montana City crew has been busy grading, sweeping, patching and helping with millings in Elk Park. The Boulder crew had been grading and helping with millings in Elk Park. A large sink hole has developed on Tebay Lane, and they discovered that an old culvert has failed. A new 30-inch culvert will be placed today, with the Boulder and Whitehall crews doing the work. The Whitehall crew has also been working on grading. Rory stated that Jeanette has mailed out bid requests for the Lower Valley Road project to everyone on the bidders list. Rory said that there is no milling work today; they haven't been paving. There are probably a couple days of work left. Rory said that he met with Bill Brownell of Gallatin County on Thursday to discuss the Williams Bridge. The bridge, built in 1898, is in bad shape, but the state hasn't lowered the weight limit. It is estimated that it will cost $1.8 million to replace the bridge. In his opinion, both the Williams and Meridian bridges will need to be replaced. Rory reported that he also met with Jerry Ward, the Whitehall public works director, about Kelly Road. Documentation of ownership of the road goes back and forth and contradicts itself. The road needs to be re-shaped and but sub-grade is bad. It was decided that the road will be patched the best it can be fur a few years until there is a milling project in the Whitehall area.
